WordPress Developer

Contract - 4 months - Market Rate, 

OTN is seeking a Word Press Developer for a 12 month contract to join a small team of in-house developers to expand our capacity and skillset.  As core member of the Software Development team, the Word Press Developer develops custom, often complex responsive WordPress-based solutions using accepted coding and WordPress best-practices, provides leadership in sourcing and developing new technologies and methods to advance OTN’s web offerings, and supports current websites through periodic updates where required. This position is located in the Toronto office.

Qualifications Attributes:


  • A four-year college diploma or university degree in computer science or computer engineering, and/or four years equivalent work experience
  • 3 to 4+ years professional PHP5 and WordPress development experience
  • Experienced in developing complete solutions, from beginning to end, using PHP and MySQL or PostgreSQL.
  • Expertise in developing, debugging, and performance tuning WordPress sites, plugins. APIs and themes.
  • Understanding of WordPress custom content types and taxonomies
  • Familiarity with WordPress VIP standards and process
  • Excellent understanding of front-end technologies, including HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, jQuery Angular, React, Backbone..
  • Knowledge of existing built-in WordPress functions
  • Creation of custom post types plugins/widgets written to conform with WordPress coding standards
  • Creation of clean, logical, well documented and re­usable code
  • Knowledge of WordPress Network (Multisite) beneficial
  • Good understanding of cross browser, cross-platform/device compatibility
  • Knowledge of how to interact with RESTful APIs and formats (JSON, XML) a plus
  • Knowledge of change control systems desired; ability to apply version control to WordPress sites
  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms
  • Working knowledge of building and optimizing Object Orientated web applications
  • Experience working with 3rd party APIs (Facebook, Twitter)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; including the ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Able to work tight deadlines, detail oriented and be able to multi-task
  • Previous experience working for a design agency advantageous
  • Required to undergo a criminal background check.


Responsibilities and Activities:  


  • Developing custom websites and applications using the latest front­end technologies
  • Providing timely resolution to reported problems with existing websites.
  • Contributing to “scope of build” conversations with creative and technical teams; identifying risks and challenges based on selected technology; recommending superior alternate development methods or technologies to facilitate development of custom solutions
  • Preparing source creative assets for technical integration (slicing large image files, optimizing images for web and mobile)
  • Ensuring all work adheres to current industry best practice
  • Contributing to OTN’s best practices for technology development; recommending, exploring and implementing better ways to deliver digital products
  • Communicate status of overall project and individual deliverables
  • Setting up multi-site WordPress builds
  • Building out responsive layouts
  • Customizing WordPress to support specific functionality
  • Assist with the Design of efficient, secure software solutions to meet business needs
  • Develop, code, test, debug and document new WordPress themes and plugins
  • Keep abreast of WordPress enhancements and updates
  • Ensure code meets software standards
  • Engage in QA-related activities as deemed necessary
  • Assist with the Change Management process
  • Develop documentation
